MOSQUITO PREVENTION
What can be done to reduce or eliminate mosquitos starts with
Prevention measures which also includes THE MOSQUITO MAZE--ORDER
One TODAY!
Also, follow these recommendations:
- Eliminate mosquito breeding and growing areas. Eliminate standing water as most eggs are laid in water and develop in water areas. Clear up, or get rid of, any receptacle that contains standing water, such as old tires, buckets/pails, unused flower pots, clogged gutters, facet/sprinkler leaks, bird baths, holes in trees, unused plastic pools, or other drainage or water accumulation areas.
- If you live near a wetland, have standing or still water, or nearby water accumulation areas, visit your local hardware store and use a larvacide containing Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelenis) in granular or Dunk form.
- If the problem is widespread in a public area such as a Park, Golf Course, Nursery or other breeding/population area, contact the Owner, local government, or Manager and solicit their assistance.
- Use repellants, sun-screen containing repellants, and clothing sprays especially for children, older citizens and pets (Mosquitoes cause the often fatal Heartworm in dogs) that are available in many stores. Products that contain DEET (and similar products) work not by repelling mosquitoes, but by blocking mosquito receptors. Citronella candles and buckets placed at ground level are also helpful and come in many pleasing fragrances and decorative vessels.
Myths and Beliefs:
- CO2 generation devices--do not elimate number of mosquito bites. (www.mosquito.org/mosquito-information/traps.aspx)
- Citrosa Plants--do not effectively eliminate mosquitoes.
- Bug Zappers--Great for moths, flys, beetles and other flying insects that are beneficial, but, NOT for mosquitoes
- Ultrasonic devices--great for ground animals and some insects, but NOT for mosquitoes.
- Bird and Bat habitats/houses--their diets do not normally include enough mosquitoes to provide effective control.
